act-gathering and planning for the Shepherd's Center of Gainesville began in May of 1997. In November of 1997 the Center officially was founded. At a ceremony that month, the Center joined the Shepherd's Centers of America and asked all those in attendance at the launch to sign the Center's mission statement. The statement reads:

The Shepherd's Center of Gainesville is an inter-faith organization of seniors helping seniors by providing support for their intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. It is inspired by religious values and, in partnership with congregations and community organizations, seeks to connect people with a full range of programs and services designed to enrich their quality of life.

The Center began an Adventures in Learning program in early 1998 and has created a series of Life Maintenance programs to help seniors who need support. The Center also has launched a newsletter, the Silver Whistle.

The Center helds its first annual seniors' prom April 4, 1998. It was a sellout, with 225 people in attendance.
